Founded in 2000, the Milwaukee Academy of Science (MAS) is a K4-12th grade independent charter school serving over 1,900 scholars. The mission of MAS is to graduate students prepared to compete successfully at the post-secondary level. African American students comprise 99% of the student body and over 95% of students are classified as economically disadvantaged. Regardless of student background and external factors, MAS maintains the expectation that with the support of our school community all students can and will learn, and will graduate high school prepared for their post-secondary educational experience.

Accountability Objectives:

Reports to the Chief Executive Officer - Responsible for overseeing the human resources department and developing and executing the People Strategy. Collaborates with department leaders to deliver solutions for talent acquisition, retention, pay for performance, and employee relations. Ensures benefit strategy aligns with the organization’s goals and provides a high value and competitiveness in the marketplace. Aligns the Human Resources organizational structure with the organization’s growth strategy and plans. Develops the human resources team through hiring, training, performance, and coaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Works with the CEO to set the human resources strategy and goals that support the organization’s strategic plan and budget.
  2. Aligns the Human Resources organizational structure and solution delivery with the organization’s growth strategy and plans. Develops the human resources team through hiring, training, performance, and coaching.
  3. Leads the execution of the talent acquisition strategy. Recommends approaches to improve quality of hire, decrease time to fill, and increase retention. Collaborates with the human resources team to continuously improve new hire and manager onboarding.
  4. Accountable for ensuring the organization has a diverse and skilled staff, and an inclusive environment that has policies that promote equity, joy and kindness among our staff. In addition, the CHRO will develop systems and structures to analyze data in these areas.
  5. Manages the end-to-end HR operational processes and procedures. Ensures HRIS technologies are being utilized and efficiencies are gained. Executes continuous improvement methodologies.
  6. Responsible for the organization's contract administration, payroll oversight (in coordination with the Finance Department regarding salary and wages changes), administration and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  7. Works with business and functional leaders to execute organizational structure changes, new position development and pay, workforce planning, change management, and employee relations.
  8. Ensures the HR teams acts as employee advocate by meeting with associates, gathering feedback and providing advice to mitigate concerns and promote employee engagement.
  9. Oversees the resolution of workplace concerns by providing advice and direction in accordance with company practice, law and/or government regulations. May conduct and/or participate in investigations. Works with the human resources team and employment attorneys.
  10. Accountable for the consistent delivery of performance management through the evaluation of employee performance through goal setting, competency measurement, and scoring.
  11. Oversees the execution of the organization’s medical benefit and leave administration strategy including the delivery of plans in order to keep costs down and quality high.
  12. Manages the oversight of retirement plan administration. Evaluates and makes recommendations on defined contribution and deferred compensation plans. Manages associate communication and education on retirement planning.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Work Environment

The work environment consists of general office conditions, large multi-floor school buildings and community location. Moving items required for event or job fairs internally and in the community required. Requirements:

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field and experience in the position or a similar HR leadership role.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in progressive human resources positions including 4 years managing a team of human resources professionals and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with leaders to develop and implement HR solutions that enable the achievement of goals.
  • Proven ability to proactively translate changing business objectives into effective HR strategies.
  • Successful experience leading a specialist or operational HR delivery function including setting the strategy and managing the daily execution.
  • Proven success building rapport, coaching and influencing at all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience using independent judgment and discretion in complex situations while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to independently organize work, balance multiple priorities and manage a variety of projects in a high volume work environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, facilitation and analytical skills.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication across various departments and levels in an organization.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of company policies and procedures as they relate to the position. Must understand and comply with all job related state and federal laws and regulations.
